Benefits Among the Best

Dear Student, Parent, Sponsor, or Guardian,

Welcome to the University of Pittsburgh!

With so much to think about as you start your exciting journey at Pitt, it is important not to neglect your health and options for health care coverage. Partnering with UPMC Health Plan, the University of Pittsburgh is proud to offer medical, dental and vision insurance plans to all students enrolled at any of the five campuses.

Young adults represent one of the largest and fastest growing segments of the U.S. population without health insurance. The absence of affordable health insurance coverage creates potential health and financial risks to students who pursue higher education. Without insurance, a serious illness or injury can result in bills totaling thousands of dollars—bills that eat away at funds earmarked for tuition and books, throwing serious financial roadblocks in the way of your college education.

To safeguard against this type of unfortunate situation, the University of Pittsburgh’s Student Health Service and the Office of Human Resources Benefits Department are proud to offer students health care coverage to complement your needs and budget. Please review the brief overview below of the insurance coverages available to students.

University Counseling Center in Oakland

Students at the Oakland campus have access to the University Counseling Center at no charge. The Center provides personal and academic counseling and is staffed by psychologists, counselors, social workers, and a psychiatrist. All counseling will be kept confidential.

Health Insurance Coverage Options Offered through the University

Students enrolled at any of the campuses are offered individual student medical, dental, and vision insurance plans. Health care facilities and providers are located near each campus. The plans are affordable and include benefits far surpassing those typically found in student insurance plans, such as:

  • Coverage for all types of illnesses and injuries, including sports and exercise injuries, whether or not incurred “in-area” or “out-of-area” while traveling or during extended off-campus periods.

  • Preventative care, along with the resources for full-scale online health promotions.
